The ViewLeeds Review
This relaxed restaurant and bar serves delicious food from a simple British menu.
The Venue
Bar 166 is situated slightly out of the way of the other bars and eateries that Horsforth has to offer on Town Street and used to be known by many as the popular Stuarts Wine Bar. This venue has undergone a complete transformation offering bistro dining with a stylish twist.
The dining room has a sophisticated air to it and is decorated in a delicious mix of cream and browns. The restaurant is not overly large yet beautifully presented with tall backed leather chairs.
There are two separate entrances leading to the bar or the restaurant depending on what takes your fancy yet the pair are connected by glass partitions. By day the bar area is a relaxing space to have an informal lunch on one of the cosy leather couches or a coffee at one of the tables for two.
By night the bar takes on a very different atmosphere with a vibe that’s more bustling, yet there are still tiny alcoves to occupy if you prefer a more romantic experience. The bar’s interior is quite modern with a combination of stone and brick walls covered in art work that reflect well known images from iconic films.
If you just fancy a drink you can perch your bum on one of the chic leather bar stools. Bar 166 also has a separate function room upstairs for private parties and special occasions. There is also a pretty outside terrace for outdoor dining and drinks.
The People
Bar staff are very laidback adding to the chilled out atmosphere of the bar area. The restaurant staff are very polite and make you feel very well looked after; taking your jacket and walking you to your table add nice finishing touches to your dining experience.
The bar area on an evening has a great energy to it, lots of background noise created by friendly chatter. The customers tend to be a mix of locals with families and couples also well catered for. Bar 166 is the perfect place for a chilled out evening with friends.
The Food
Bar 166 offers a credit crunch lunch menu for those who are keeping a close eye on their pennies. It presents cheap and cheerful sandwiches that come with delicious homemade chips and a drink for the small price of £6.
The lunch menu offers a delightful range of nibbles from £3 that includes nachos with cheese and an olive and feta combo, with slightly bigger light bites available from £7.
There is a good range of starters at £5.50 a pop. If it’s something on the larger scale you’re after try one of the fillers (£11) such as the traditional British favourite of haddock and chips or the bangers and mash that come in generous portions.
The evening menu is just as tempting with the sirloin steak at £15.90, plus a wide range of pastas, risottos and burgers on offer. Main courses are £12.90. There are some original vegetarian dishes on the menu such as the lentil and potato kiev and the homedried tomato tartlet. The presentation of the food is simple yet effective.
The Drink
The list of red and white wine is extensive but the menu only offers two choices of rose wine. Wine is available by the bottle from around £12.90.
There is a pleasing range of champagne starting from £28.50 for a bottle and also magnums of deluxe champagne for those wanting to celebrate a special occasion. The list of cocktails is endless with a vodka mini martini being a favourite at £2.90. Cocktails are two for one on a Thursday.
